I graduated from Monacan High School in 2005 and planned to go to Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA. I loved the campus, the atmosphere, and was going to be the first in my family with a college degree. After my acceptance there earlier in 2005, I thought that most of the work had been completed. Needless to say, once I saw the tuition and fees I owed for the first year I made one of my hardest decisions….not to attend. I started working full-time while attending John Tyler Community College. As graduation from John Tyler became closer, I looked at my options for my next school. Since I needed to continue working full-time and stay in Richmond, my two options were VCU and the SCS at the University of Richmond. I never have liked downtown Richmond, especially at night by myself.
I visited the University of Richmond’s campus in the spring of 2008 during an information session and learned about all the degrees offered. I have always desired to be an elementary school teacher and the SCS had the program for me. I was pleased to learn that the master’s is now offered in teaching as well so I can finish up my entire degree at the University of Richmond.
This is my first semester at the SCS and I am anxious to finish up and start my “real career” as a teacher. I know I will be successful at the University of Richmond and enjoy my last few college years.

I am the first in my family to earn a degree and I know how much that means to you and your family. I hope that you are as excited as I am to learn as much as you can.
There are many young people that go to college straight out of high school without really knowing what they want in life. The only reason they go to college is to get out of the house and because someone is paying for them to go. Those of us with a few years of age on us try very hard to be successful in our degree pursuit.
I’m am sure that it would be much easier being younger and not having any other responsibilities in life. Take your time and enjoy your life.
At one time, I had also thought about going into teaching, but circumstances aligned themselves otherwise. Are you focusing on a particular subject, or just general elementary education?
